Sweet Potato or Yams?

Yup that's what everyone wants to know.  When at the supermarket it can get quite confusing on which to pick up, place in your cart and bring home with you to share amongst your family and friends.  After some research for an extensive amount of time I finally found an answer that I feel comfortable sharing with you.   this is a yam Turns out, that here in the Western World, you can really only buy sweet potatoes.  If you come across a yam,  the chances are that it has been erroneously marked as a "yam".  It's really a sweet potato in yam's clothing (chuckles to self).  Yams are indigenous to Africa and Asia and are very large root vegetables; they are rarely seen in the U.S. Here are some benefits to the orange fleshed brown covered sweet potato: If you allow them to sit on ice they will taste sweeter.  This is due to a physical change that takes place between the cold and the starch of the potato High in fiber (be sure to eat that skin) Ric...

Beat Caffeine Withdrawal

Good day to all of you.   Lets have a little coffee talk for a minute. You love it right?  The taste of it, the smell, its smoothness and of course the perk of feeling alive and human by the time you get to the office?  But what if you wanted to cut back?  How could you do it without the withdrawals? ROOIBOS !   Aspalathus linearis (it's scientific name) is indigenous to South Africa's shrub land and is becoming ever more popular throughout the world.   Rooibos has a high level of antioxidants, lack of caffeine and low tannins.  It helps with allergies, nervous tension and digestion as well as helping to ease the jitters from coffee withdrawal.  Because of Rooibos' effect on the nervous system, it helps to alleviate those symptoms which are prone in excessive coffee drinking.  Bonus!  Since it is so high in antioxidants and phenols, you'll still get that awake and alive feeling, even clear headed.  Whether you're trying ...

Easy Meal

Hello out there!  Hope everyone had a very enjoyable weekend.  Lets get right to it today... Most of us love to eat foods that are familiar and comforting (that's why we call them comfort foods).  I was thinking about this over the weekend and a way that I could make one of my favorite comfort foods more healthy and less guilty.  Good ol' fashioned Mac & Cheese.  A kid classic!  As an adult, eating something this simple can make you feel like a million bucks; well emotionally but not so great in the waist line. Anyway here's what you'll need to make a healthy, guilt free dish of Mac & Cheese     2 cups nondairy milk, divided (I use soy)     4 ounces pimentos        1 1/2 teaspoons sea salt     1/2 teaspoon onion powder     3-4 tablespoons nutritional yeast flakes     1/4 teaspoon garlic powder     2 tablespoons cornstarch     1/4 cup raw cashews ...

Mmmm Dessert!

I don't know about you but I have a sweet tooth and I have it bad.  It's mighty hard to be a holistic nutritionist and crave the sweetest of the sweet and not being able to fulfill the craving.  However, such is life and sometimes you just have to indulge and get a little creative.  My sister gave me a great recipe for blueberry pie and I decided to make a few substitutions to cut the calories and turn a sugary snack into a pretty healthy piece of bliss.   Here's what you'll need: For the crust 1 cup apple sauce - no added sugar and it should be organic (you can puree 1-2 apples and add   a 1/4 tsp of honey or agave) 1/2 lb raw almonds, finely ground 7 eggs seperated round baking pan 1/2 tsp olive oil Pie filling and topping 2 pints organic blueberries 1 tsp finely chopped dates for sweetness *optional Combine apple sauce and egg yolks until light and fluffy, you can also add 1/2 tsp of dates in place of sugar here Stir in alm...
